Kanye West Also Trounces 50 Cent Outside US

Thursday, September 20th, 2007

Kanye WestRoc-A-Fella recording artist Kanye West is riding high in spirits as he continues to chock more success after his 9/11 Graduation Album Release.

This year probably seems to be the best year for Kanye West in his entire Music Career and so far the biggest debut in Island Def Jam history.

News trickling in shows that not only did Kanye West Massacre 50 Cent on the night of 9/11 in the US, he actually beat 50 cents in sales outside US.

Some of the known countries include Canada, UK and Japan. This is definitely good news for Kanye. Kanye will definitely be going “Straight to the Bank” and not 50 Cent.

Kanye West Massacres 50 Cent in Album Sales

Thursday, September 20th, 2007

50 and KanyeImagine this, three weeks before the release of your third studio album, Forbes releases a list of the highest earning hiphop monguls of the American music industry and you spot the number 2 position with 32million dollars next to Jay z with P Diddy following at Number 3.

Meanwhile Kanye West is at number 8th position with 17million dollars (1 Point for 50 cent).

Weeks later you do a remix of your hit track “I got money” featuring Jay Z and P Diddy talking about how much money you guys got.

Then all of a sudden, 9/11 is approaching, whilst those who lost their loved ones on that unfortunate day are preparing for the memorial ceremony, 50 cent and Kanye West are in their cribs praying hard to beat the other in the week’s music sales.

A week before 9/11, SOHH conducts a survey to determine who will make more sales on 9/11 and Kanye West Wins.

50 cent also goes on air, saying he will quit music if Kanye West outsells him.

Like an election poll, a week after 9/11 hip hop music fans are waiting patiently for the hip hop polls, 50 cent or Kanye.

Then there are such great headlines, Kanye West’s ‘Graduation’ bests 50 Cent’s ‘Curtis’, Kanye West Murders 50 Cent (Saleswise That Is…), Kanye Beats 50 Cent Selling 957,000 Copies …. etc

Then like a typical 2000 Florida saga, 50 cent crying foul — “Rigging”.

West’s “Graduation” sold 957,000 copies, easily surpassing the 691,000 copies sold by “Curtis,” according to Nielsen SoundScan. West’s total is the highest first-week sales for an album in more than two years, when 50 Cent’s sophomore effort, “The Massacre,” opened with 1.1 million copies in March 2005, the last album to reach the seven-figure mark.

I guess 50 Cent might want to reconsider his earlier statement that he will retire if he lost to Kanye West. Lets wait and see what happens in their second week sales.

Music Industry in Ghana suffering Massively From Piracy

Thursday, September 20th, 2007

Piracy 1The Ghanaian music industry continues to suffer the wrath of pirates in recent times as piracy in the country has gone to its peak according to a recent survey released by the Ghanaian government.

There have been recent crusades and campaigns saying no to piracy, but then it seems that the more musicians complain about piracy, the more these pirates increase their activities.

Alhaji Sidiku Buari, the president of the musicians union of Ghana (MUSIGA) over the weekend added his voice to the campaign to clamp down pirators in Ghana. At a press conference, he outlined measures which the musician body is currently taking to solve this problem.

Piracy in the Ghanaian music industry was costing the nation above ¢20.2 billion (GH¢2.02million) in early 2006. Come 2007, the rate at which piracy is costing the nation has risen by a whooping 68% to ¢34 billion (GH¢3.4 million).

Ghana’s recording industry is currently worth over GH¢6.2 million ($ 7million). Ghana’s domestic music piracy level is between 10 to 25%, whiles Nigeria’s and Kenya’s is over 50%.

In the USA, a report released by Institute of Policy Innovation (IPI) on August 21, 2007 indicates that rampant global piracy of recorded music has cost the U.S. $12.5 billion in economic output and 71,060 jobs annually.

BET Hip Hop Awards

The 2007 BET Hip Hop Awards is here with us once again. Watching last year’s edition with The Game, Lil Wayne and Jim Jones doing their own thing on stage is something I really can’t forget.

There was a little bit of tension at the auditorium:- Jim Jones singing “Balling” with Jay Z sitting in front looking at him whilst The Game also chicken out when he changed his controversial verse “I have no beef with Jay” to “Peace to Jay” and a host of other performances.

This year’s awards night which happens to be the 2nd since its inception is slated for the 17th of October in Atlanta.

Atlanta rapper and King of the South T.I. , leads the pack of recently announced nominees for this year’s BET Hip-Hop Awards.

T.I. tops the list of this year’s contenders with nine nominations, followed by Lil’ Wayne with seven nods, Kanye West with six, five for Common, Jay-Z is up for four awards, and Ludacris and 50 Cent each snag three nominations.
