El Azifet Thrills Music Fans at Kheireddine Palace
The all- female orchestra “El-Azifet”(meaning the musicians), brought up yet another of their masterful performances on Saturday at the Kheireddine palace in the Medina, as they featured a musical show dubbed “Sanadir”. The show is part of the program of the Tunis Medina Festival.
“Sanadir” which is meant as a tribute to the late talented Tunisian composer and violinist Kaddour Srarfi, was composed by Faycal Karoui. The show is inspired from the ‘Malouf’ which has its rots in Arab-Andalusian music, whose nostalgia- filled melodies were brought by Muslims from Spain in the 16 th century.
The musical show which was presented to the audience for the first time, was widely appreciated by lovers of Arab-Andalusian music who during two hours, were mesmerized by the sheer beauty of the melodies featured.
The orchestra which was directed by Amina Srarfi, the first woman conductor in Tunisia , also played oriental, Turkish, Egyptian and Algerian musical pieces.
El Azifet was founded in 1992 and has since performed across, Europe, the Middle East, Asia, and more recently America where they performed at the Getty Villa.
Amina Srarfi, the founder and director of “El Azifet” is also the first female orchestra conductor in the Arab world. She is an accomplished violinist and a trained musicologist, as well as a member of the Tunisian symphony orchestra.
