TY Drops Debut Solo Album
With the release last month, of Green land, TY Shokefun-Bello has officially become the first KUSH girl to release a solo debut album.
The multi-talented artist who’s video for the title track is also topping charts on cable and terrestrial TV, has lived up to all expetations wit her 15-tracked LP, and she, characteristically, blurrs the line between soul, funk, rhythm&blues, and what is traditionally called gospel. The music on green land is rich and mature, reminiscent of KUSH’s The Experience; and TY’s vocals even make it the more soothing.
The album, which is already finding its way to the market, gives you the impression that the singer is having fun this minute; them reflecting on her life the next; and a while later, you hear a track that makes you think, oh., she’s trying to connect with her maker. It is such varying themes that make it certain that, unlike most gospel albums, green land doesn’t bore you easily, and it gets to a point where you actually forget you’re listening to a gospel CD. No wonder she tells us, ‘this album tells the story of my life. My experiences and what I’ve been through’.
But it’s not surprising, considering the amount of work Mrs Shokefun invests in her materials. And the producer, Mosa Adegboye, hitherto unknown (who features on the banging, eclectic cut ’supernatural’) has established himself as a beatmaker to court, with the prowess he displays on green land.
It will take a lover of good music, and a patient, keen listener to fully appreciate this album though. Not the kind of CD you hear in a hurry and throw in your favourite playlist. Perhaps that’s why the singer didn’t put the album together in a hurry. Years, that’s what it took. And the result shows that hardwork still pays dividend.
