Scar and Acid Scoop Channel O Awards
Botswana’s hip-hop artist Thato “Scar” Matlhabaphiri and duo Acid scooped top honours at the Channel O Spirit of Africa Music Video Awards held at the Johannesburg City Hall on Thursday.
Matlhabaphiri, clinched the best hip-hop video accolades with his Metlholo video, beating Kold Produk, Prokid, Eldee, Jimmy Jatt, and Malawian Tay Grin.
He was also nominated in two other categories - Best African (Southern) and Best newcomer. Acid, made up of James Serema and Jimmy Sengwaketsi, also did Botswana proud by winning the Best Dance Video for their Banyana le Basimane video.
Born in Molepolole on October 23, 1984, Matlhabaphiri started his music career in 2001 after having written and recorded two songs for DJ Sid double compilation the previous year.
The youngster however only recorded his debut album in 2002 titled Illegal Act and toured Botswana with Odirile ‘Vee’ Sento and Eskimos. Matlhabaphiri made a spectacular breakthrough in 2004 when he scooped two awards during the Botswana Hip-Hop Music Awards (BHIMPMA), these being Lyricist of the Year, and Track of the Year, for his track My People.
